GEC Watch: SAB, Star Plus gain in Week 21 while others lose

4 June 2014

The Hindi GEC hierarchy remains unchanged.

All the Hindi GECs saw declines in their numbers in Week 21 of 2014. The only channels which grew were SAB and Star Plus.

Star Plus, the flagship Hindi general entertainment channel from the STAR India stable, continued to lead the genre with 699034 GVTs in Week 21 as opposed to 680792 GVTs in Week 20. As per TAM data (HSM, C&S, 4+, including LC1 markets), provided by a subscriber, ZEE TV was at No. 2 recording 386568 GVTs as compared to 394023 GVTs last week.

Colors got the third position in the Hindi GEC flock. It lost numbers to register 359877 GVTs in the week ended May 24 as opposed to 367024 GVTs in Week 20.

Life OK, the second general entertainment channel (GEC) from STAR India recorded 332689 GVTs compared to 353689 GVTs in Week 20.

At No. 5 was Sony Entertainment Television that recorded 312543 GVTs as compared to 312921 GVTs in the earlier week.

Sony's sister GEC SAB TV, with 266714 GVTs (last week 258013 GVTs) was one of the gainers though it stood at No. 6.

Sahara One and Zee Anmol clocked 19348 and 69811 GVTs, respectively, in Week 21.

Star Plus' Diya Aur Baati Hum ruled the roost of the top programmes in the Hindi GECs with 9971 TVTs. It was followed by Saathiya Saath Nibhana from the same channel that scored 8585 TVTs.

Zee TV's Jodha Akbar stood next with 7947 TVTs. At No. 4 was Star Plus' Ye Hai Mohabbatein which notched 6768 TVTs during the week.

Star Plus' Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai stood at No. 5 with 6432 TVTs, followed by Mahabharat of the same channel which garnered 6371 TVTs. Veera (Star Plus) stood at No. 7 with 6150 TVTs. Pyaar Ka Dard from the same channel grabbed the eighth position with 6042 TVTs.

These were followed by Colors' Comedy Nights with Kapil and Khatron Ke Khiladi which clocked 5628 TVTs and 5469 TVTs respectively, thus notching up the ninth and the tenth spots, respectively.

For the record, TVT is television viewership in 1000s (TVR in 1000). It is the average number of individuals in '000s that are available at any given minute of a programme/day part that is under consideration. It captures growth in TV audiences in the country in absolute numbers. The TVR system, in contrast, works on percentages.
