How to legally watch TV shows and movies on the move

12 March 2015

You, the consumer, should be the king of content. It should be available to you at your convenience, in a format of your choosing, and on a device of your choosing. That movement and tilt to customer satisfaction is slowly underway and the evolution is only natural because it's not always possible to take time out to watch a movie in a theatre or sit down at a pre-defined time for a TV show. Sure, a DVR set top box is a solution, but it also restricts you to your room. Thankfully, there are a number of free apps available today using which you can access your favourite content on your phone, tablet or computer — as long as you have stable Internet.

BoxTVBoxTV lets you view TV shows and movies in 11 languages — it works on web browsers as well as iOS, Android and Windows phone devices. A free account sign-up is required after which you can access movies and shows listed in the free section without paying anything. They also have multiple subscription packages for content starting as low as `49/month. The content catalogue is regularly updated with new titles and shows. A 'For You' section recommends movies and TV shows based on previously watched content.
HotStarThis is a relatively new app by Star India. It's completely free to use and you can use it to stream movies, TV shows as well as sports events to your phone/tablet. Some features require a free account sign-up, but you can start using it instantly. They offer content in seven languages with the option to create a playlist of your choice. It is available on Android, iOS and Nokia Asha. There is also an option to download the content to your device for offline viewing.
Everywhere TVIf you are a Tata Sky subscriber, then you can use their free Everywhere TV app to access more than 65 channels on the move. You can even view programmes aired in the past 5 days, as well as access their video-on-demand service. While the app is available free for Android, iOS, PC and MAC, you have to pay a monthly subscription of Rs 60 per month to use this service. Keep in mind that you can only use a maximum of two devices to access Everywhere TV with each Tata Sky subscriber ID.
On your computerDon't get lost in torrents and illegal downloads — there are services where you can legally stream video content using your web browser. Check out YouTube BoxOffice (www.youtube.com/boxoffice) where you can stream full-length movies, free of cost. They offer movies across multiple languages and in various resolutions — you can subscribe to a movie channel in a particular language or just search for a movie. For TV shows, most TV channels now stream their shows on their own websites. Just head to the official website and go to the videos section — many offer free viewing (full episodes of previously aired TV shows) and that too in HD quality.
