3 March 2014

'Saathiya' tops last night's ratings

Star Plus continued to dominate the UK Asian TV ratings last night but with much smaller numbers tuning into the six-day prime-time fictions.

According to exclusive data obtained by BizAsia, ‘Saathiya’ was the top show with 119,800 viewers at 19:00 – peaking at 153,500 viewers. Next were ‘Meri Bhabhi’ and ‘Mahabharat’ both with 97,700 viewers. Third was ‘Veera’ with 94,200 viewers.

One of the channel’s much loved shows ‘Saraswatichandra’ at 19:30 delivered the worst ever ratings last night with just 59,500 viewers tuning in at 19:30. Over the last three days, ratings for this show have been dwindling – a sign that the current track post Saras-Kumud marriage is not being appreciated by viewers.

On Colors, ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’ was the top rated show on the channel with 87,000 viewers – peaking at 112,600 viewers, ‘India’s Got Talent’ was next with 81,400 viewers.

On Rishtey, discussion show ‘Aamne Saamne’ at 21:30 rated well with 48,700 viewers. Pakistani drama ‘Mera Naseeb’ mustered in 13,200 viewers.

On Star Life Ok, ‘Savdhaan India’ drew 17,900 viewers at 22:00. The first weekend match of the Asia Cup between Bangladesh and Afghanistan did average with 14,700 viewers tuning in & peaking at 26,700 viewers.

Above data is an overnight rating – and may change slightly after consolidated figures become available in seven days from BARB.

Content acquisition a double-edged sword for English GECs

Kevin Vaz, Business Head, Star World which also has channels like, FX and Star World Premiere HD said, “Our audience has the maximum skewness towards drama, hence we are keen to acquire shows in that category. We acquired 26 news shows in September 2013. When we chose shows, the audience profile matters a lot. Our core audience would be up-market English speaking people who like global content.”

Hindi GECs: A battle for eyeballs

Star Plus general manager Gaurav Banerjee says: “The story is urban and contemporary. This love story begins after a marriage gets over. It explores the theme of a second chance in love. With well-etched characters and a strong urban narrative, the show deals with day-to-day issues faced by modern couples. We are positive that our metro audiences will see a connect with Ishita and Raman, and follow their story.”
