Star Gold acquires nine big films for Rs 180 crore

Star Gold has acquired nine big movies including 'Jai Ho', 'Kick', 'Singham 2' and 'Bombay Velvet' for an estimated cost of Rs 180 crore. 

Star Gold announced its acquisition of a fresh movie library as part of its plan for 2014 in the Hindi movie genre space of leading actors like Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Ranbir Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan. The new acquisition consists of nine highly awaited Bollywood films of the year, including Salman Khan starrer 'Jai Ho' and 'Kick', Anurag Kashyap's Ranbir Kapoor starrer 'Bombay Velvet', Ranbir's 'Roy', Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif's 'Bang Bang', Prabhu Deva's directorial venture 'Action Jackson', Rohit Shetty-Ajay Devgn's 'Singham 2', Sajid Khan's comedy 'Hamshakals' and Vidya Balan's detective film 'Bobby Jasoos'. Though the channel refused to speak about the amount spent on satellite rights of these films, according to sources, the cost of these big movies is estimated to be in the range of Rs 15-45 crore. The total amount spent on acquisition of 18 films for 2014 is in the range of Rs 300-350 crore, out of which 60-65 per cent is spent on these nine big films. "We have consistently received a phenomenal response for the big ticket premieres on our network. For 2014, we have targeted diverse content line up acquiring films across different genres. Our strategy has always been to simply offer our viewers' content they want to watch, rather than what we want them to watch," Hemal Jhaveri, executive vice president, Star Gold and Movies OK, said.

The other acquired films of 2014 include 'Creature', 'Gang of Ghosts', 'Traffic', 'Sonali Cable', 'O Teri', 'Bhaag Johnny' and 'Hawaa Hawaai'.

Touted to be the first hit of 2014, 'Yaariyan' shall kick start the movie premieres for the year across the network. This would be followed by Salman's 'Jai Ho', the first Rs 100 crore grossing blockbuster of the year.

In early 2013, Star India had signed an exclusive television broadcast rights (satellite rights) deal with Salman and Ajay for their films till 2017 for Rs 500 crore and Rs 400 crore respectively for all their movies.

The newly acquired movies are bought for a period of ten years with exclusive telecast rights.
