14 June 2013

~Conferred the Pitch Brands 50 Award for excellence in marketing in the Social Marketers Category~

New Delhi, June 14, 2013: India’s most influential television show - Satyamev Jayate – has bagged the Pitch Brands 50 Award for its innovative and immensely successful social marketing campaign that transcended geographical boundaries to reach viewers across the globe.

Satyamev Jayate was awarded for excellence in marketing in the Social Marketers Category for its ground-breaking initiatives that multiplied the show’s reach and enhanced its connect with the audience. The award recognizes Satyamev Jayate’s remarkable contribution in highlighting social issues that continue to plague modern India and its efforts to create awareness by using television as a true catalyst for social change.

The show reached over 500 million Indians, airing simultaneously in multiple languages, pioneering the concept of simulcast on different TV channels. It is the most-talked about show in the history of Indian television, questioning social mores, helping shape mindsets and leaving a lasting impact with compelling tales from everyday life. Satyamev Jayate saw an unprecedented popularity on the digital platform with over a billion impressions, taking Twitter by storm as all episodes trended at the top across India, and some even trended worldwide. The show engaged people from 165 countries and 5,435 cities worldwide, from Alaska to Australia.

“Satyamev Jayate continues to occupy a distinct place in the minds of its viewers, even months after its first season concluded. The show is an extension of Star India’s commitment to progressive and compelling content that inspires viewers to be the change they want to see in the society. We value the recognition and hope the focus will continue to be on the issues that matter and the people who are trying to make a difference,” Mr. Uday Shankar, CEO, Star India, said.

“Star India is honoured to receive the prestigious Pitch Brands 50 Award. We believed in Satyamev Jayate’s powerful content and innovated at every step to increase the brand’s reach and impact. This included multiple engagement platforms, such as a simulcast across nine channels in different languages, a high-impact campaign that created intrigue and generated conversations at a scale that no show has seen before and the most extensive digital engagement program ever. The marketing mission was to make this the brand of the people and it is indeed gratifying to be recognized for marketing that created lasting social impact,” Ms. Gayatri Yadav, Executive Vice President Marketing and Communications at Star India, said.

Pitch Brands 50 Awards honoured close to 40 brands and companies for their novel marketing initiatives in several categories including Bang for the Buck, Bottom of Pyramid, Buzzy Brands, Globetrotters, Impactful Launches, Marketing Innovators, Rechargers, Resurgent Brands and Social Marketers.

"Pitch Brands 50 Awards go beyond the traditional practice of slicing the marketing universe by industry verticals. They are based on the contemporary brand management themes and practices. So every brand competes with every other in the category. We track brands 365 days a year and arrive the shortlist on the basis of data gathered over the year," Annurag Batra, Chairman & Editor-in-Chief, the exchange4media Group -- the publishers of Pitch – said.

This is the fourth successive accolade for Satyamev Jayate and follows the Mumbai Press Club’s coveted RedInk Award in May that recognized Star India for featuring gutsy journalism on a general entertainment channel. The Government of India and popular television channel CNN-IBN also acknowledged Star India’s efforts last year. The show was rewarded by the National Commission for Scheduled Castes in October while it bagged the CNN-IBN ‘Indian of The Year’ award under Special Achievement category in December last year for its efforts to create awareness against social discrimination.

Ashish Golwalkar, programming head, non-fiction, Star Plus, says, "If the content is strong, people really don't care about anything else as long as you are making them laugh. People keep drawing comparisons and we are aware of it. But, if you look at 'Mad in India' closely, it is a very different show.
