Stories matter most

'Neerja' and 'M.S.Dhoni – The Untold Story' have firmly established the power of storytelling in cinema

When Fox Star Studio started making 'Neerja', a movie about a girl’s courage, and 'M.S.Dhoni – The Untold Story', a movie about a determined boy’s commitment to his big goal, it was an immense task. The stories needed to appeal to everyone, challenging the trend where box office success depends on the mass clout of big ticket male actors.

The task at hand

When we were picking lead actors for the two movies, we had to get close to the character, the real MS Dhoni, the real Neerja : the mannerism, the composure, the conduct. Sushant Singh Rajput and Sonam Kapoor came across as replicas of Dhoni and Neerja on those yardsticks.

The mass connect

The other towering challenge was that 'M.S. Dhoni – The Untold Story' was a biopic of a person still active in his career. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the skipper of the Indian Cricket team and playing well in form when the movie was made and hit the theatres. It had to be just the right mix of facts and emotions so the audience could easily find a connect with the story of the real Dhoni.

Showing the hero on the pitch was not just about the helicopter shots. We had to capture the insecure lover who couldn’t commit but cried inconsolably when he lost his love to nature, the child that wanted to collect bikes, the melting but determined heart that knew he had to give up sleep and work hard when he saw his father slogging it out in the wee hours of a foggy winter morning.

The movie made people recognise the power of belief, and understand that anyone can make it to the top no matter what. To see a living icon make it through a tough humble life made the story tremendously relevant.

There was a similar story for 'Neerja'. The challenge was to showcase the extraordinary story of an ordinary girl that young India was not even aware of. We needed to subtly bring to life a long forgotten incident and let people know about the courage it takes for a girl next door to fight terrorists to save the lives of a couple of hundred strangers. Neerja was not nurturing big dreams of becoming a hero. But when it came to it, she stood tall.We wanted the youth of today to learn from this forgotten icon.

We were honoured when 'Neerja' won the National Award for the Best Feature Film in Hindi in 2016. This recognition gives us further confidence to back great stories and meaningful content.

“'Neerja' and 'M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story' are two films that broke the narrative and boldly reached out to young Indians in the clutter of the often used word 'masala entertainment'.”
