People Excellence Program (PEP) is designed to bring transparency and clarity in the way we manage performance.

Over the last decade we have grown exponentially, expanding our presence into different entertainment segments and genres. Our employee strength too has risen manifold, with offices across different cities.

As Star grows, it is imperative that our employees feel connected to our vision and are able to contribute meaningfully. We strive to create a workplace where everyone knows how their work adds to the impact of Star. To fulfil this ambition, we recently embarked on a journey to reimagine our existing performance management system.

People Excellence Program (PEP) is designed to bring transparency and clarity in the way we manage performance. People over process

It started with us understanding what our employees really cared for. We studied employee survey results and conducted in-person interviews across functions, tenures and seniority levels. We wanted the new program to reflect the culture of Star – inclusive, open and creative. People over process. From performance management to people development.

At its core, the program converts bosses into coaches by stressing on quarterly, one-on-one discussions with employees about different goals to be met in lines with that of the company’s, and, also, together chart out a clear way to achieve these.

Employees’ development is at the centre of the program and so is the collaboration with different teams to take on a number of creatively satisfying and challenging projects.

“I especially like the feature of quarterly reviews as it will help us better understand where we are, where we want to be and how to plan ahead,” Habib Shaikh, Branding and Design team.

“The biggest take-away of PEP, for me, is that each of us will have a crystal-clear understanding of our goals. Focus on fewer goals will ensure that we pick what’s important and chase that. This is in line with the Star way of chasing fewer but game-changing things. I am also happy that the program calls out and recognises collaboration as an important goal. Cross-functional teams working together is a necessity for a large company like Star and is a big step in the right direction,” Arpita Menon of Partnership and Innovation team.

We believe that new programs are only effective when everyone understands them well. Our employees went through in-depth sessions on PEP. People managers went through elaborate training on managing collaborative teams. Knowing our mobile-first audience, we created an app for PEP which our employees can access on either App store or Play store along with a website.

Just a month into the launch, we are witnessing a new energy in the organisation and we are excited by the possibilities that PEP can bring.
