Star India's Hotstar gets 7.2 million video views for the first match of IPL

10 April 2015

Star India's digital content platform Hotstar has hit the ground running in the IPL with the first match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders recording 7.2 million video views on the mobile app, said Star India, which holds the mobile and internet rights for the IPL this year. This is 6 times the viewership on starsports.com last year for the first match of Pepsi IPL 2014.

Hotstar, which was launched two weeks before the World Cup began in February, was downloaded by smartphone users over 15 million times in a month.
Hotstar will stream all the 60 games of the Indian Premier League and Star expects the platform to cross 100 million fans by the end of the tournament. The broadcaster, which owns the platform, also expects considerable growth in video consumption over last year's version of IPL which was broadcast on Starsports.com.
The smartphone app will also be programming a digital-only pre show, building on the success of the two original shows it created for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 called One Tip One Hand and Juicy Half Volley.
